Sade, Marquis de (1740 - 1814). French Writer.

Marquis de Sade was the pen name of Donatien Alphonse Francois, count de Sade who is best known for his erotic works which involved explorations of sexual and political freedom and cruelty; he is also credited with a number of sexually scandalous acts which bear his name to this day. Born to nobles in twelfth century Paris, de Sade was sent to Avignon, at the age of four, to be cared for by an uncle who was a notorious sexual deviant. After a while, he attended the Jesuit college of Louis Le Grand where he discovered the academic classics and the classics of discipline.

At age 14 he left the Jesuits to serve in the military where he participated in the Seven Years War. He married the daughter of a high-ranking family in 1763 but he maintained at least one affair and invited prostitutes to his home. He was then arrested and exiled from Paris and sent to his wife’s family home in Normandy. In 1772 he was condemned to death in Aix for an Aunnatural crime but he managed to escape to Italy. Scandals and criminal activities, as well as a royal Asecret letter penned by his mother-in-law, sent him to what would become 27 years of imprisonment beginning in Vincennes in 1777. While imprisoned, de Sade began to write sexually graphic novels and plays in an attempt to combat boredom.

After escaping from Vincennes in 1784, de Sade was transferred to Paris’ infamous Bastille. He was later incarcerated in Charenton, the infamous lunatic asylum. While incarcerated, he wrote the underground classic Les Journées de Sodom. In 1790, the French Revolution freed de Sade and he returned home to discover that his wife had joined a convent.

Living in poverty, he anonymously published his most famous work Justine in 1791. Justine graphically depicts the sexual encounters of the young Justine. In the work, de Sade constructs a philosophy which portrays God as evil and Justine’s misfortunes are the direct result of denying this truth. The literary critics of the day called Justine obscene and an abomination. In 1798, de Sade published Juliette as the sequel to Justine. Juliette, Justine’s sister, is portrayed as a heroic figure who delights in evil.

In 1801, de Sade’s publisher told Bonaparte, Napoleon’s government who was responsible for writing Justine. Sade was returned to Charenton where he wrote and directed plays utilizing the inmates as actors. He also began work on a ten volume novel, Crimes of Passion. He died on 2 December, 1814. At which time, his son burned all existing manuscripts of his writings.

As recently as 1957, de Sade’s works were banned from official publication by French courts as the obscene ravings of a monster. However, more recent critical and psychological evaluations of these works have declared them the precursors of Freud’s notions of the unconscious and Nietzsche’s superman.

Burlington, Richard Boyle, Fourth Earl of Cork and Third Earl of (1694-1753): English Architect.

As the foremost exponent of Palladianism in Great Britain, Lord Burlington was the dominant figure in British architecture in the early Georgian period. Palladianism was named after the sixteenth-century architect Andrea Palladio and was first introduced to England by Inigo Jones in the seventeenth century.

After ascending to his title in 1704, Burlington went on the Grand Tour in 1714-5, where he became enamored of Palladian ideas in architecture. He returned to Italy in 1719 to study Palladio’s own work in Vicenza. Upon his return to England, he used his immense wealth and influential social position to promote a revival of Palladianism in English architecture. The Palladian revival represented a return to a more austere classicism in reaction to the then dominant Baroque style of Christopher Wren, Hawksmoor, Nicholas, and Vanbrugh, Sir John, which had been closely associated with the Stuart court. After the Hanoverian succession to the British crown, Palladianism became the favored style of Whig Oligarchy, of which Burlington was himself a member, at least in part as a result of Burlington’s efforts.

Burlington sponsored the publication of several Palladian texts, including The Designs of Inigo Jones (1727), which featured several of his own designs, and Palladio’s own drawings in Fabbriche Antiche disegnate da Andrea Palladio (1730). Burlington’s own work included Tottenham Park in Wiltshire (begun in 1721), Chiswick in Middlesex (1723-1729), and the York Assembly Rooms (1731-2). He also worked to advance the careers of his protégés, such as Kent, William, to important positions in the Office of Works.

After 1730, Palladian style became the norm for public buildings and country houses in England. Burlington had established himself as the ultimate judge of taste and style in English architecture, and as the reigning authority, he was widely and regularly consulted on matters of design by all those of social significance. The Palladian Revival he promoted set the stage for the later emergence of Neoclassicism in the work of Adam, Robert and others.

Zoffani, Johann (1733-1810): German/English, Painter.

Johann Zoffani, or John Zoffany, was born in Frankfurt, Germany, studied in Germany and Rome, and in around 1760 moved to London where he became famous; in fact, he is often regarded as an English artist. He is admired for great technical skill, an eye for exact detail, and lively and personal portraits of contemporaries. Zoffani excelled at small-scale pieces, portraits, and larger conversation pieces, or portraits of groups of people in their customary surroundings. A Neo-Classical artist, he was trained to portray models posed in the attitudes of antique Greek statues and to imitate classical techniques of perfecting anatomy. His paintings often feature portrayals of well-known classical artworks. Like the British painter Hogarth, William, Zoffani painted scenes from the London stage, notable performances by the famed actor David Garrick. Zoffani was a founding member of the Royal Academy, established in 1768. King George III became his patron, commissioning royal portraits and financing his travels. Zoffani worked as a portrait painter in India for several years. His creations during a lengthy sojourn to Italy included his best known work, the magnificent “Tribuna of the Uffizi” of 1780, portraying a group of gentlemen admiring paintings and sculptures in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. Another well-known painting is “Charles Towneley, Esquire, and His Friends in the Towneley Gallery, Park Street, Westminister” (1790). Charles Towneley was a collector of ancient art, and the painting portrays several famous Greek sculptures now in the British Museum. After a long and brilliant career, Zoffani died in Strand-on-the-Green, Middlesex, England in 1810.

Young, Edward (1683-1765): English Writer.

Edward Young's poetry epitomizes the transition from Pope, Alexander's neoclassicism to the sentimentalism and personal emotions which characterized the literature of the second half of the eighteenth century. The melancholy and morbid atmosphere of Night Thoughts align Young with the poetry of the "Graveyard School" of Gray, Thomas and Robert Blair, but his brand of subjectivity and poetic meditation also foreshadowed Wordsworth's romantic poetry.

After studying at Winchester and Oxford, Young struggled for most of his early life to pursue a career in the Church of England, while he tried his pen at many genres with limited success. His early poetry was mainly eulogistic and occasional, written often with the purpose of finding a patron. His three dramas hardly rose above the mundane level of contemporary heroic tragedy, but The Revenge (1721) became a standard work in the repertoire of London companies. Young gained a better reputation from The Universal Passion (1725-28), also known as The Love of Fame, a satire in six parts on the innately good but potentially corruptible qualities of human nature. In 1724 Young took ecclesiastical orders and in 1728 he was appointed chaplain to George II. Two years later came his appointment as Rector of Welwyn, and in 1731 he married Lady Elizabeth Lee. Young's happiness did not last long, and his stepdaughter, her husband and finally his wife all died between 1736 and 1740.

Paradoxically, the melancholy state engendered in Young by this series of family misfortunes led to the full maturation of his poetical powers. The nine parts of The Complaint, or Night Thoughts on Life, Death, and Immortality (1742-45), a series of meditative poems, enjoyed immense popularity both in England and abroad, with translations in many languages. Young's initial inspiration came from the sad events of his life, but Night Thoughts draws on more universal themes from Christianity. The poem offers a series of calm and meditative conversations on various themes regarding man's life, the unifying theme of the nine nights being immortality and the lessons to be learnt from death. In his dialogues with Lorenzo, the dissipated youth, the narrator mourns over the deaths of Lucia, Narcissa and Philander, whom, according to most interpretations, are loosely based on Young's wife, his stepdaughter and her husband. The poem is however dominated by Young's belief in the truths of Christian revelation, and particularly by his faith in the immortality of man's soul.

Young's own religious motivations, merging with his personal record of grief and deeply subjective melancholy, gave the poem an air of originality and poignant individuality, which critics have often seen as anticipating Romanticism. Another important contribution towards the formation of a new aesthetics is Conjectures of Original Composition (1759), a treatise in which Young refused the authority of rules in poetry and stressed the superiority of originality over imitation. By using a series of vegetal and organic metaphors to symbolize the original and individual genius and by advocating a closer relationship to nature for poets, Young anticipated the language and the themes of the Romantics and in particular the priority of spontaneity and feeling in poetry emphasized by Wordsworth in his "Preface" to the Lyrical Ballads.

Wright of Derby, Joseph (1734-1797), English Painter.

Joseph Wright was born into a respected professional family in Derby, a regional commercial and cultural center. At 17, he was sent to London for formal training in painting, beginning with a two-year apprenticeship. In 1757, he returned to Derby to establish a portrait painting practice. Between 1765 and 1773, he exhibited with the Society of Artists of Great Britain, the commercial rival of the Royal Academy which was open to artists of all kinds. From 1773 to 1775, he undertook the Grand Tour of Italy along with his new wife. From then on, Wright extended the range of his work to include landscapes and myths. After the failure of the Society of Artists, Wright exhibited with the Royal Academy, though he quarreled with it often. He died on August 24, 1797.

Though taking pride in himself as a painter, Wright was a man of the broader enlightened culture and socialized with a wide range of men from a variety of fields. His friends included Josiah Wedgewood and Darwin, Erasmus of the Birmingham Lunar Society, and he was probably a Free-Mason. In his work, Wright drew on a wide range of pictorial, scientific, and literary sources. He is best known as a painter of scientific experiments and manufacturing processes, and his work helped to found the genre of industrial painting as a legitimate field. Later in his life, he was renowned for his paintings of striking natural phenomena, most famously Mount Vesuvius. Wright’s work is characterized by his use of vivid contrasts of light and dark for dramatic effect.

Woolman, John (1720-1772): American Theologian

John Woolman was a Quaker minister, a writer and worker for social justice, and the author of a personal journal that has given inspiration to generations of readers.
Woolman was born on his family’s farm on Rancocas in New Jersey and went to school with other Quaker children. As a young man, he clerked in a store in Mount Holly, NJ, was often asked to write important documents, and became a tailor as well. Although successful in his trade, he resolved not to be too successful, but rather have time for writing and ministerial traveling.

His writings include The Journal of John Woolman, begun in 1756 as a testimony to the work of God’s love in his life, and a variety of letters and essays, including “Some Considerations on the Keeping of Negroes” and “A Plea for the Poor.”

Woolman’s work for social justice was not limited to writing. He spoke to slaveowners about the practice being "inconsistent with the Christian religion"; he asked to be “excused” from writing bills of sale or wills that included the transfer slaves; when he visited homes of slaveowners, he left money to compensate the slaves for their work for him; and he adopted the odd dress of white undyed clothes, rather than those made from dyes produced by slave labor. His testimony against slavery was instrumental in moving the Religious Society of Friends to cease keeping slaves and engaging in slave trade.

In 1772 he sailed to England (living with the crew rather than indulging in the “superfluities” of the passengers cabins) and attended London Yearly Meeting of the Society of Friends. Although he was not warmly received at first, his message prompted London Yearly Meeting to issue a statement condemning slavery. Woolman died while in England, after contracting smallpox.

Wollstonecraft, Mary (1759-1797): English Writer.

Prolific novelist and essayist Mary Wollstonecraft was often attacked or deliberately ignored by the critics who immediately followed her, but she is praised today as the founder of the modern feminist movement. Wollstonecraft is best known, aside from being the mother of novelist Mary Shelley, as the writer of A Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1792), which argues for political and social equality between the sexes and encourages education for women. Wollstonecraft’s body of work is a diverse collection of carefully formed arguments covering many topics, including education, capital punishment, revolution, and women’s rights, a startling production from an era in which women were expected to be little more than graceful but silent companions for men.

Wollstonecraft was born in London, in 1759, second of seven children to a weaver, Edward John Wollstonecraft, and Elizabeth Dickson. With an abusive father and a mother who focused her attentions on the eldest child, Wollstonecraft left home quickly. She opened a school, in 1784, with her sister Eliza and her closest friend Fanny Blood, but her hopes of an ideal life as an educator were short-lived. The school closed, and Blood died in 1785 after the birth of her premature child, a tragedy Wollstonecraft witnessed firsthand. In running the school, however, Wollstonecraft had made the acquaintance of minister Price, Richard, who introduced her to a number of radical writers and intellectuals. Among these was publisher Joseph Johnson, who commissioned her to write a book on education, Thoughts on the Education of Girls (1786), addressing in particular the need for women’s education. She also began writing other works, Original Stories from Real Life (1787), Mary: A Fiction (1788), and contributing journal articles, beginning in 1788, to Johnson’s journal, the Analytical Review.

In the following year, a sermon written by Price, praising the French Revolution, angered Edmund Burke, who consequently produced a widely read criticism of the Revolution, Reflections on the Revolution in France (1790). This book prompted an immediate rejoinder from Wollstonecraft, who took less than a month to compose A Vindication of the Rights of Men (1790), published anonymously. At times addressing itself directly to Burke, Edmund, the work is a strident attack on his position and rhetorical style, also challenging the tyranny of monarchical rule. Wollstonecraft criticized the insincerity of the rich, supported the Revolution and called for an end to traditions that had created a nation of poverty. In vindicating Price as well as the rights of men, she had also vaulted herself onto the intellectual stage of England, gaining the attentions and friendship of a number of liberal writers, including Paine, Thomas, Godwin, William and Blake, William.

Wollstonecraft published her most famous work in 1792, A Vindication of the Rights of Woman. The title reflects a legitimate response to many revolutionary supporters of the time, who were urging the end of tyranny and the establishment of universal rights for men while nonetheless ignoring the oppression of women. While radical at the time, it contains many arguments for basic equality between the sexes that would be taken for granted today. The book criticizes the degradation inherent in respecting women only for their beauty, and maintains that lack of education for women is a source of tragic consequences, resulting in conditions little better than slavery. The work further argues that the effects of civil and political slavery diminish both women and men, and therefore weaken the nation. As a solution, Wollstonecraft calls for a “revolution in female manners,” urging that not only should women be educated; they should be given the same education as men, and in the same classrooms.

In 1792, after publishing Vindication, Wollstonecraft went to France to see the effects of the Revolution firsthand. With the political climate increasingly dangerous in England, Wollstonecraft had reason to stay in France, but another reason was a love affair with Gilbert Imlay, an American writer, with whom she had a child, Fanny, in 1794. Imlay traveled on business frequently, eventually prompting Wollstonecraft to return to England to meet him. There she discovered his ongoing affair with an actress, which led to the first of her two suicide attempts. In an effort to maintain their relationship, she took a business trip to Scandinavia on his behalf, bringing her daughter with her and publishing A Short Residence in Sweden (1796) about the journey. When she returned and discovered that Imlay was still living with a mistress, she again attempted suicide.

In 1796, however, she renewed her acquaintance with liberal writer William Godwin, and their relationship blossomed. After she became pregnant, they married, in 1797, though Godwin, who had previously announced himself opposed to the practice of marriage, was consequently attacked by conservative critics for his hypocrisy. Their otherwise idyllic marriage ended when Wollstonecraft died a few days after giving birth to a daughter, Mary, from complications arising from the birth. In the following year, Godwin published her final novel, Maria or the Wrongs of Woman (1798), a sequel to A Vindication of the Rights of Woman. Godwin also published his own biography of Wollstonecraft, Memoirs (1798), and though the work was meant to honor her memory, it had the opposite effect. Critics used the text, which included an admission of the couple’s intimacy before marriage, as proof that feminism encouraged illicit behavior. The immediate result was a shunning of Wollstonecraft by Victorian critics and writers, who distanced themselves from her arguments and largely ignored her work.

Despite the censure suffered immediately following her death, Wollstonecraft is today considered one of the premiere feminist writers of English literature, receiving vindication and continued reevaluation in the contemporary critical world. Her attack on the traditions of monarchy foreshadowed the gradual expansion of European democracy, and her arguments for women’s rights and education have likewise seen fruition over two centuries of continued advances of the feminist cause.

Wollaston, William Hyde (1766-1828): English Chemist.

Born to a famous scientific family, Wollaston quickly made his own mark, distinguishing himself in the fields of chemistry, optics, and physiology. After completing medical studies at Cambridge, he soon walked away from the profession and turned his attention to broader scientific pursuits. Along the way, he held a variety of administrative posts within the Royal Society and endowed the medal which still bears his name.

Forming a partnership with Smithson Tennant, Wollaston undertook the challenge which had stymied chemists for years--that of producing platinum in a malleable state. Wollaston's practice of working with the metal in extremely small quantities was not only the secret of his ultimate success but also allowed the ancillary discovery of the elements Palladium and Rhodium.

Another outgrowth of Wollaston's investigations into the chemical realm were his various optical devices. In 1809, he designed a reflective goniometer, a device employed in crystallography. Other instruments would follow. He is perhaps best remembered for the camera lucida, a drawing aid utilizing a quadrilateral glass prism. Related work with prisms resulted in his discovery of dark lines in the solar spectrum which would later be rediscovered and carefully mapped by Fraunhofer. His interest in optics also led Wollaston into investigations in physiology, particularly the mechanics of binocular vision.

Wollaston's enduring legacy lies not only within his own discoveries, but within those of the generations of scientists his work would come to inspire; both the mineral Wollastonite and Wollaston Island in Baffin Bay are named in his honor.

Wollaston, William (1659-1724): English Philosopher.

Wollaston was born in 1659 in Coton-Clanford, Staffordshire. He attended Sidney-Sussex College, Cambridge, where he was an impoverished but dedicated student. Failing to find a preaching position, Wollaston taught school in Birmingham for six years from 1682. In 1688 he unexpectedly inherited the great wealth of an identically named cousin, but had to support various parasitical relations. Marrying, he moved to London, where he lived quietly if studiously until his death in 1724.

Wollaston’s sole publication Religion of Nature Delineated, on which his fame rests, appeared privately in 1722, and publicly two years later. Wollaston defends the unconventional view that many actions we perform implicitly assert propositions. Thus, if I steal your horse, the wrongness of my action is explained by my (implicitly) making the false claim that the horse is mine. Wollaston’s theory is furiously mocked by David Hume in his Treatise of Human Nature (1740). Hume claims that Wollaston’s theory excludes all moral wrongs that do not induce a false judgment. For example, a thief who stealthily yet obviously steals would be doubly protected from being judged immoral—if unobserved his actions do not declare anything, whereas if he is seen he honestly portrays himself as a thief!

Wollaston was an early and influential proponent of ethical rationalism, against the dominant sentimentalism of British ethical thought. While Hume’s criticisms may not be wholly fair, Wollaston is best remembered as the object of Hume’s scorn.
